Recently, House of Hearts had the opportunity to link up with L.A. based producer 'Elephante' to discuss his music and ongoing U.S. tour. After speaking with him it became apparent that this young producer is not only talented, but truly humble in manner. With his tour making a stop here at Philadelphia's Rumor on April 14th, for a nearly sold out show, the anticipation grows as the event date draws near. Read up and see what's the latest...
HoH: Could you please introduce yourself to our readers. Maybe tell us a little bit about up bringing and how your started making music? Where does the name Elephante hail from?
Elephante: I've been making music my whole life - I started off with piano and guitar when I was younger and was singing in bands and stuff through high school and college. I started making electronic music after I heard a Skrillex song and my head exploded.
At the time I was working a day job, and the "elephant" in the room was that I was really unhappy and all I wanted to do was make music - I was spending all my nights and weekends grinding on tracks, I eventually just quit and became the elephante.
HoH: I started going through your music catalog and I gotta say your sound reminds me a lot of what I love about electro/progressive house. There’s a certain nostalgia attached to electro house music that make me want to celebrate life and renewal of the seasons. Do you find that your music takes you places in this sense?
Elephante: That's awesome - I really try to make music that makes people feel something, whether its joy or celebration or anything like that. I ultimately just try to make music that I think is cool and I'm excited about, and hope that it translates and other people dig it too. It is hard for me to listen to my own music objectively - I've listened to every second of my songs a million times over from making it, so I usually stop listening once I'm finished haha.
HoH: Right off the bat I took a liking to your production of “Closer” featuring the lovely Bishøp. Could you tell us a bit about this latest release?
Elephante: It's a really feel good progressive house tune - it actually ended up taking a bunch of different versions until it felt right, I think the final master was like version 17 or something. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and how simple and joyful it is, and Bishøp is absolutely brilliant on it. And the reception so far has really been amazing!
I’ve seen a lot of SoundCloud descriptions put forth by artists over my years and your story behind acquiring the “Closer” the melody was captivating and truly speak volumes on your passion for the music. Please share with our readers…
Elephante: Haha - basically I had gone through all these different ideas for it and none of them really felt perfect. And then I was on a plane and it suddenly hit me, this dooooo doo doo doo doo doo doooo thing, and I know its the one and I start fist pumping and people are looking at me weird and stuff and I don't care at all cuz I'm so excited.
HoH: I heard you’re in the middle of your tour. Recently you had a tour stop down in [DALLAS], Texas at The Lizard Lounge and you got to play with one of Philadelphia producer Speaker of the House. Are you two well acquainted after the April 1st show?
Elephante: Yes we has an amazing show down in Dallas! We've actually played together a few times - he's a great dude and always a pleasure playing with him. He's got a ton of talent and has a bright future ahead of him.
HoH: I feel like a lot of us read about the “glitz & glamour” of being a touring artist, but what do you miss most about not being home? Where is home? What keeps you most centered while there?
Elephante: Its funny, touring life is literally 80% being on planes and taxis - most of the time you land, go to the venue, go back to the hotel, and go straight back to the airport. Of course I can't complain because I get to play music for a living, but it can certainly get tiring. I'm living in LA, and I really appreciate the little things now - sleeping in my own bed, cooking my own meals.
HoH: What’s planned for the rest of 2016? Are you still working diligently on producing music from the road. Clearly you have a knack for working on airplanes!
Elephante: Always! I've still got a bunch of shows on this tour (Philly soon!), and a few festivals this summer. And of course always working on music - it keeps me sane. I've got a bunch of original music lined up and a few remixes as well. I will say that Closer is one of my greatest airplane production success stories - its usually a lot tougher working on the road for me.
HoH: I’d like to point out to our readers that you’ll be playing Philly’s Rumor on April 14th. What’s the vibe coming into Philadelphia? How many visits have you made already to “The City of Brotherly Love”?
Elephante: I am super stoked! The show is already sold out which is amazing, but even crazier because its my first time ever playing in Philly... I'm not really sure what to expect, but I'm sure it's gonna be a zoo and I'm bringing a ton of new music that I can't wait to play out!
