Las Vegas, Nevada - where to begin? This city is known as "Sin City," the place for partying, beautiful men and women, and the night life. The night life upheld its impeccable reputation the weekend of July 16th through July 20th. Luckily, I had the opportunity to experience some of my favorite DJ's, and they certainly did not disappoint.
Let's start with Calvin Harris:
Watching Calvin Harris perform at the nightclub, Omnia, was like something out of a dream. The lights shining, the strobes flying, and the smoke encompassing the air, the crowd was on cloud nine. Between the ambiance of the venue, the engagement he had with the thousands of people that were there to enjoy his beats, and the overall atmosphere of the crowd feeding off of one another and raging out as one big happy family, it was easy to fall even more in love with him and his music.
He performed a lot of crowd favorites, such as Summer, I Need Your Love, and Sweet Nothing, but he did not stop there. Harris performed from 11:30pm until 4:30am, which can be super difficult to keep a crowd engaged for that amount of time, however, he lived up to his reputation of being one of the greatest DJ's, and even at the 4:30am mark, myself and thousands of others were still ready to keep raging with him.
Tommy Trash, Diplo, and Skrillex - WOW:
Tommy Trash opened for Diplo at Encore Beach Club during the early hours of 11am-2pm. Most people vacationing in Las Vegas would be dead tired from the previous nights, unable to fully enjoy the dayclub scene. However, Tommy Trash livened up a clearly hurting crowd. The beach club was outdoors, with a massive swimming pool located in the middle of the venue, floating beds surrounding the perimeter, and a stage for people to dance on in the middle of the pool. When Tommy Trash took the stage and dropped HEX, girls and guys flooded the dance floor around the DJ booth, bonding and feeling the tones take over their bodies. When you turned around to face the pool, the stage was flooded with people dancing, instantly awoken and ready to take on the day. One of the best precursors for what was about to happen next.
At 2pm, loud chants for Diplo began. We could hardly take it anymore and were ready to see what Diplo had in store. When Diplo took the stage and dropped his first song Revolution, I could hardly contain myself, and neither could anyone else. At this point in the day, a wind and rain storm had started, but that didn't stop him and it definitely did not stop the crowd. It seemed as if the storm only intensified the electric vibes of the crowd, and jolted Diplo to rage even more.
Towards the end of his set the rain died down, the wind settled, and I would say it was definitely the calm before the storm, but not weather - the storm that was Skrillex! Once the intro to Where Are U Now kicked in, Skrillex walked out on stage. The vibes between the two DJ's were felt by everyone experiencing this show. Skrillex whipped out 5 bottles of champagne and about a thousand $1 bills, and started to shower the crowd with both. The champagne and money hitting your skin sent electric chills down my spine, making it a perfect ending to an epic performance by all three.
Tiesto is an artist that I never thought I would have the opportunity to experience. He has been an influence in the EDM world for over 15 years, and the expense to see him is something I did not think I would be able to afford. It was as if the heavens opened up and the EDM God's granted me the chance to see him at Hakkasan nightclub...for free! Granted VIP access and bottle service by promoters, my dream was coming true - Tiesto would be in my reach.
Thousands of fans, ragers, rave kids, and new timers, all gathered for one epic experience. The main stage where Tiesto performed had a massive sign with his name illuminating in lights. When he finally took the stage at 12am, he opened with a jam that I did not expect to hear: Eternity! Standing on top of couches and bar tops, tables and chairs, the crowd began to lose control. The light show lit up the venue - smoke, strobes, flames - truly electrifying the crowd. His performance prevented your feet from standing still, and it was in that moment that I truly felt one with the atmosphere, the music, and the lights. Tiesto was on stage from 12am until 5am, and in those five hours, all of Hakkasan was one big happy family. Fingers were intertwined, bodies bumping with one another, sweat beading down each face, but in those moments we were all beautiful. We were alive.
Thank you, Las Vegas, for the most epic EDM experience of my life.
