It’s no secret that Philly loves the wubs. That’s why we at House of Hearts are very excited to introduce you to a brand-new label called “Last Life.” Although technically a sublabel of NoDegree Collective -- which was founded just last year -- Last Life will be solely for dubstep releases. It’s crazy to think even today, in 2017, dubstep is still going strong—so strong in fact that Philly is being blessed with an entirely new label dedicated to it!
The sublabel is the brain-child of Pete Sharma (NoDegree founder and CEO) and Harvey Steezy (owner of Fuxxwitus EDM). Steezy joined with NoDegree as a promoter and eventual A&R, and is now the new manager of Last Life.
I had the chance to speak briefly with Pete Sharma himself about his exhilarating new project. Among other things, he told me how his goal is to create a place to showcase up and coming talent in the Philly bass music scene. And they’ve already started--their debut release just dropped yesterday. Below is the conversation we had, and below that is their new release; feel free to take a listen…
HoH Brendan: What was your relationship with Harvey Steezy before working on this project?
Pete: We both started collaborating through music. Harvey began helping with promotion for NoDegree Collective, curating playlists, and finding artists before becoming the A&R of Last Life.
HoH Brendan: In just a few words could you tell us how you guys got started and why? Often there’s something like a “Eureka!” moment; say you’re sitting talking with a couple close friends or colleagues and think suddenly “hey, we have this experience and these resources, maybe we could do this.” Was there any such moment when the concept for a new sub-label was conceived?
Pete: My co-founder Francis Toiman and myself setup the beginning stages of NoDegree through our website nodegreecollective.com finding new music, and doing articles on some of the amazing talent from our friends at Lowly Palace. With Harvey joining, it launched NoDegree into the Dubstep scene allowing for the creation of Last Life.
HoH Brendan: We already know that Last Life is a dubstep-focused sub-label of NoDegree Collective, but can you tell us what about the sub-label--as well as the talent you plan on signing--will make it stand out in the industry?
Pete: Our main focus is finding artists that fit our vision and sound, not what is “popular”. You can’t stand out by following the crowd.
HoH Brendan: Tell us more about your vision for your company. Where do you see it going in the next 5 years?
Pete: We want NoDegree Collective to be a space of creative freedom allowing our artists to expand their talents and styles. We love experimenting with the new ideas, concepts, and music each artist brings to the table. We have a dedicated team, great resources, and talented artists that will allow us to become one of the leading tastemakers in the industry within the next five years.
HoH Brendan: My last question for today is a bit of a wild card... The new release, a track titled “Kira” by the 21 year old dubstep/riddim/trap artist ProDuxer was just dropped on your website. Obviously, this is just the first work of many talented producers that your label will give a chance to shine and be heard. What else do you have in store for Philly in the future?
Pete: Big Tingz…
There you have it. This sure to be just the tip of the iceberg for Last Life. We will be paying very close attention to see how this young label evolves in the future…
