As you read this, Julio Mejia and Matt Toth of GTA are somewhere out there, actively touring the United States for their Goons Take America tour. We were fortunate enough to link up with the Miami based duo for a brief Q&A sesh. Sit back as we discuss their origins of influence, evolution and inspiring talent they've come to work with from over the years. Consider this your precursor to this weekends show. As the Goons Take America tour stops here in Philly on November 14th at The Fillmore.
Q. Tell us a little about yourself. How did you guys come together?
A. We're GTA from Miami! We met through a mutual friend on Facebook and ended up meeting in person in a studio. We just hit it off and have been making music together since then!
Q. You guys once said that your Spanish background plays into your music sound. How did that idea start?
A. Well growing up as young latinos in Miami, we would grow up around a lot of different latin styles of music. Julio started playing trumpet in his school band which led him to play in some jazz and salsa bands in college. Matt has always been into salsa since being a kid and both of us definitely use some latin influences a lot while making music!
Q. Has another culture influenced your music since?
A. All kinds! We were fortunate enough to have traveled the world through touring and have learned/been inspired by lots of different music styles! One of our favorites is Baile Funk from Brazil, also some classic bubbling from The Netherlands (among many others).
Q. Was there ever a point in the early part of your career where you thought music would not happen?
A. To be honest not really! We both just love making music and saw it more as a hobby when we started. We always dreamed of being musicians and we thought (and still think) if music doesn't work out, we'd still make music just because thats what we love to do.
Q. Who has most impressed you (working with) in your career so far?
A. Skrillex! He's one of the fastest/smartest/creative producers we've ever worked with... He's also a really good dude and has some incredible ideas!
Q. Whats the weirdest way you have found influence for creating a new song?
A. Probably just playing video games like Mortal Kombat hahaha. We get inspired by all the gore ;) JK lol but really we gain inspiration from almost anything so its hard to say whats the weirdest haha!
Q. What genre outside of house has most influenced you?
A. Anything The Neptunes have made! Whether its a dope R&B vibe or a rock song, They have so many inspiring songs!
Q. You guys have a stop coming up in Philadelphia at The Fillmore on 11/14. If you guys could get a cheesesteak delivered to you, what would it be and what would you put on it?
A. Neither! We would order Ishkabibbles on South Street and get it whiz/wit.
